The Stoic in Stoic ProjectWorks
When I first chose the name Stoic ProjectWorks for my freelance consultancy company, a few people reached out. They loved the name because they knew it was a very personal choice, but they also warned me that “Stoic” isn’t the first word that comes to mind when people think about project management.
Unfortunately, that’s true, because project management has a bad wrap. When people think about project management, they rarely think about good project management. Instead, they focus on their history of problem projects, the ones where project plans went awry, delivery dates were missed, budgets were blown, and team members were stressed, unhappy, and unsure of how to make things better.
Nobody wants to work in that kind of environment. Nobody.
But this is where the connection between superior project management and Stoicism is clear to me: In a world where chaos can reign supreme if it’s allowed to, the ability to meet challenges with a thoughtful, resilient, and prepared mindset is invaluable.
At Stoic ProjectWorks, we draw inspiration from the principles of Stoicism and apply them directly to the way we deliver projects:
We focus on what we can control. Instead of spinning wheels on external chaos, we anchor attention on clear processes, steady communication, and achievable next steps.
We prepare for obstacles. We expect challenges, not as failures, but as part of the work. Risks flagged early are easier to navigate than surprises.
We respond, not react. Project leadership is about creating calm, not adding noise. When tensions rise, we strive to bring clarity and perspective.
We stay steady under pressure. Challenges create urgency and noise, but we keep teams focused and moving forward without adding drama.
And just because we believe in Stoicism doesn’t mean we don’t value empathy. We’re not robots. In fact, Stoicism pairs perfectly with our first core value: Be Human. This value reminds us that while we can’t control every storm, we can choose to lead by keeping teams grounded, focused, and working on appropriate tasks without becoming overwhelmed.
That’s the spirit behind Stoic ProjectWorks: staying resilient, intentional, and calm in the face of challenges. Because in the end, great project management isn’t about avoiding chaos, it’s about navigating it with clarity and care.
